6 Common Misconceptions About Computer & Electronics Recycling
1 / Its OK to just throw my old electronics out with regular trash pick up.
Many electronics are restricted from regular trash in Pennsylvania under the Covered Device Recycling Act. They can also contain hazardous materials and private data that require proper handling.
2 / All recyclers securely wipe data.
Not all recyclers provide certified data destruction. Without a documented process, there’s no guarantee your personal or business data is fully removed.
3 / Donation is always better.
While donation is commendable and encouraged, it depends on the device condition and whether data has been properly removed. In some cases, secure recycling is the more responsible option.
4 / Scrap yards are the same and pay.
Scrap yards may offer small payouts, but it’s often only pennies per pound and typically requires volume, disassembly, and sorting—which may still result in very little overall value. Also, data security is not their priority, so your data is a risk. Furthermore, scrap yards can be disorganized and messy, may pose a risk of damage to your vehicle during unloading, often provide little to no assistance when unloading items, and may require prior registration before you can drop off materials.
5 / Recycling electronics is expensive or complicated.
With the right provider, recycling is simple, fast, and often free or low-cost with pickup and drop-off options.
6 / There’s a lot of valuable metals in old electronics or "you're just taking the gold."
Only some devices contain recoverable metals, and quantities are small. Refining materials requires volume on an industrial scale, unlike the smaller lots of items we often collect. Responsible recycling focuses on safe recovery—we do not refine materials in any capacity.
